Educational Interpreter PL Series, Live in Cleveland, GA

March 21 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

Description:

This live session will consist of three mini-workshops.

Part 1: Under Construction: How Understanding English Text Structure Can Contribute to a More Effective ASL Interpretation
This workshop will introduce participants to a variety of text structures and explain how they are used to organize information to improve comprehension and understanding of the author’s purpose. Participants will be guided in identifying key elements of text structures and directed in incorporating appropriate ASL techniques when rendering an interpretation of an English text.

Part 2: Redefining the Role: Enhancing Interpreting Skills Through Role Clarity
The role of the educational interpreter has evolved far beyond simply “relaying messages.” This interactive workshop explores the paradigm shift in interpreter roles within K-12 settings, using current frameworks and role metaphors to deepen understanding and improve practice. Participants will examine how perceptions of the interpreter’s role impact decision-making, language use, and interactions with students and school personnel. Through guided reflection and skills-based activities, interpreters will leave better equipped to navigate their roles with clarity and confidence — ultimately enhancing the quality of their interpreting in educational environments.

Part 3: Visual Vernacular Techniques for Educational Interpreters
This workshop will introduce participants to the five visual vernacular techniques.  It will consider the use of visual vernacular techniques in an educational setting.
