Explicit Vocabulary Strategies for Middle School ELA
DaMeka Whitehead, ELA Virtual Learning Community leader and teacher at Woodland Middle School in Henry County, focuses on strategies to explicitly teach vocabulary. Drawing on the evidence base from the “IES Practice Guide: Improving Adolescent Literacy: Effective Classroom and Intervention Practices,” DaMeka delves into explaining this evidence-based practice. She shares several anecdotes, models the strategy, and provides practical resources for teachers. In addition to the protocols, DaMeka shares a document that participants can easily adapt for their classrooms.
Utilizing explicit vocabulary instruction aids the development of students’ knowledge base so that they can tackle increasingly complex texts. For more information, join the 6-8 ELA Virtual Learning Community in GaDOE Community! While these recorded webinars introduce each evidence-based or high-leverage practice, the GaDOE Community groups provide the opportunity for engagement with your colleagues across the state for a deeper dive and the exchange of existing resources.
