Explicit Vocabulary Strategies for High School
Recorded Webinar

Duration: 30 minutes
Intended Audience: ESOL Teachers, Gifted and Talented Teachers, High School Teachers, Instructional Coaches/Coordinators, Librarians/Media Specialists, MTSS Team, School Leaders, Special Education Teachers
In this webinar, Nicole Lord, ELA Virtual Learning Community leader and teacher at Fannin County High School, focuses on several strategies for explicit vocabulary instruction that have made an impact on her secondary learners. Drawing on the evidence base from the “IES Practice Guide: Improving Adolescent Literacy: Effective Classroom and Intervention Practices,” Nicole delves into explaining this evidence-based practice. She shares several anecdotes, models the strategy, and provides practical resources for teachers.
Explicitly teaching vocabulary has the potential to empower students to read, comprehend, and analyze new texts of increasing complexity, with modeling as the key. For more information and resources, please join the 11-12 ELA Virtual Learning group in GaDOE Community! While each recorded webinar introduces evidence-based or high-leverage practices, the GaDOE Community groups allow for a deeper dive by providing opportunities to engage with educators from across the state, share ideas, and exchange resources.
