Georgia Milestones Science: Questions, Clarity, and Resources
September 14 - September 28

Description:
Misconceptions about the Georgia Milestones Science assessment can unintentionally influence instructional decisions and classroom practices. This three-part professional learning series is designed to build assessment literacy by clarifying what the science assessment does—and does not—measure. Participants will examine common myths, explore available resources, and engage with frequently asked questions from educators across the state.
Session 1: Debunking Common Misconceptions About Georgia Milestones Science
This session addresses common misconceptions about the Georgia Milestones Science assessment by explaining how the assessment is developed and reviewed. Participants will learn how Georgia educators are directly involved in writing, reviewing, and field-testing assessment items to ensure alignment to the science standards.
The session also clarifies why many science items include reading and analysis. Educators will examine how text-based information supports students in making sense of scientific phenomena rather than simply recalling facts. By the end of the session, participants will have a clearer understanding of assessment design and how Georgia Milestones Science reflects three-dimensional learning.
Session 2: Exploring Available Resources to Support Instruction and Understanding
In this session, participants will explore key resources available to support understanding of the Georgia Milestones Science assessment and its connection to instruction. Educators will review and discuss resources that clarify standards expectations, assessment design, and three-dimensional alignment.
The session emphasizes how these tools can be used to support planning, professional conversations, and instructional coherence, rather than as test-preparation materials. Participants will leave with greater familiarity with where to find accurate information and how to leverage resources to support sound instructional practices.
Session 3: What We’re Hearing—Responding to Frequently Asked Questions from the Field
This session is designed to directly address pre-submitted questions from educators related to the Georgia Milestones Science assessment. Questions should be submitted through the registration form. Drawing from themes and concerns shared by teachers and leaders across the state, the session focuses on providing clear, consistent responses grounded in assessment intent, design, and alignment to the science standards.
This session aims to clarify areas of uncertainty and reduce misinformation through collaboration between the GaDOE Science Team and the GaDOE Assessment Team. The session emphasizes transparency and shared understanding, supporting educators in confidently communicating accurate information within their schools and districts. Quarterly office hours will follow, providing additional opportunities for assessment-related questions.
