Georgia Writes: Leading a Culture of Writing
June 1 - November 5

Description:
Georgia Writes: Leading a Culture of Writing is a virtual professional learning series designed for building-level leaders committed to strengthening writing instruction and sustaining a high-quality culture of writing across their schools. Grounded in Georgia’s ELA standards and the science of writing, this virtual series, equips administrators with the research, structures, and leadership practices needed to ensure writing instruction is explicit, coherent, and deeply embedded across grade levels.
Across seven interactive sessions, administrators will examine what the research says about effective writing instruction and the reciprocal relationship between writing and reading. Leaders will develop a shared vision for high-quality writing instruction, grounded in Georgia’s K-12 ELA standards, and learn how to translate that vision into building-wide expectations, schedules, and instructional conditions.
Session 1: The Building Leader’s Role in High-Quality Writing Instruction
Session 2: Designing Schedules and Structures that Support Writing Across the Day
Session 3: Establishing Writing Practices and Expectations
Session 4: Writing Practices and Expectations in the Classroom
Session 5: Coaching and Supporting Teachers
Session 6: Monitoring for Impact: Walkthrough Look-Fors & Data to Review
Season 7: Sustaining a Culture of Writing and Reading Achievement
The series emphasizes the leader’s role in coherence and sustainability. Administrators examine how writing expectations develop vertically from kindergarten through grade 12, how to support teachers through feedback cycles and PLC structures, and how to monitor implementation without prescribing programs or scripts. Sessions are intentionally sequenced to precede teacher learning, allowing leaders to anticipate instructional shifts, remove barriers, and support implementation as it unfolds. The series culminates in a focus on sustaining momentum over time—embedding writing as a permanent part of school culture through routines, onboarding systems, and leadership practices that endure.
By the end of the series, leaders leave with a clear, research-aligned approach, practical monitoring tools, and a shared language that positions writing as a cornerstone of literacy achievement across every classroom.
