Mapping Meaning: Map the Classroom, Map the Discourse
November 14 @ 9:00 am - 2:00 pm

Description:
Educational interpreting requires more than accurately interpreting what a teacher says. Classroom communication is complex, dynamic, and highly visual. Information may come from the teacher, students, whiteboards, presentations, diagrams, graphic organizers, maps, classroom materials, and other visual supports, while ideas are simultaneously being introduced, connected, compared, sequenced, emphasized, and developed through classroom discourse.
In this five-hour interactive skills lab, participants will explore two complementary strategies: Map the Classroom and Map the Discourse. Using classroom scenarios, video clips, hands-on mapping activities, discussion, and reflection, participants will move beyond sentence-by-sentence interpreting to consider the larger question: How is meaning being built across the classroom?
Learning Objectives
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
-Identify at least four sources of visual, spatial, or linguistic information within a classroom scenario that may influence interpreting decisions.
-Identify at least four discourse structures within classroom-style communication, such as sequencing, comparison/contrast, cause and effect, main idea/supporting details, and problem/solution.
-Create a map of a classroom scenario that represents key information sources, concepts, referents, relationships, and relevant visual or spatial information.
-Analyze at least three interpreting decision points within a classroom scenario and select appropriate strategies for representing visual, spatial, and discourse information in ASL.
-Develop a personal action plan identifying at least two mapping strategies they will incorporate into their educational interpreting practice.
