Systematic Language Instruction for DHH Students

February 27 - March 27

Description:

This workshop explores how language develops for students who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) and how educators can intentionally support that growth through systematic language instruction. Participants will look at what language delay means for DHH learners and how it differs from language disorder or language deprivation, with attention to early language access, hearing status, amplification, and language environment. The session highlights key early language milestones in ASL and spoken English and examines how late identification or inconsistent input can impact receptive and expressive language development. Educators will learn practical instructional routines and vocabulary strategies that support language growth across visual and auditory settings and can be embedded into everyday routines. The workshop also addresses progress monitoring and using observation data to decide when to reinforce, reteach, or scaffold instruction.
