When it comes to mental health, we often take a downstream approach, only focusing on individual treatment. Upstream approaches utilize prevention strategies for the whole school community. In this session, participants learn what upstream prevention is and why it’s important, particularly for suicide and other risk behavior prevention (e.g., substance use/misuse, bullying behaviors). A panel of state and district leaders discuss upstream prevention examples. Participants also learn about start-up funding opportunities for the upstream prevention program, Sources of Strength, via Project AWARE and the State Opioid Response Grants.
