Weaving Social Studies and ELA to Support Language, Literacy, and Content Knowledge
Join the Georgia Department of Education’s Asha Jassani, ELA/ESOL Program Specialist, and Nancy Balaun, Social Studies and ESOL Program Specialist, as we explore the natural integration of ELA and Social Studies through accessible, engaging, and interactive strategies specifically designed to support English learners. This session focuses on using Social Studies and ELA content in hands-on activities that utilize multiple modalities of communication (SWIRL – Speaking, Writing, Illustrating, Reading, and Listening). Participants take away ready-to-use ideas that leverage students’ funds of knowledge to make meaningful content and language connections.
