Session 1: Jumpstart – Introduction to the Science of Reading
This kickoff session introduces Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVIs) to the Science of Reading and provides an overview of the research-based principles that support how children learn to read. Participants explore how these literacy foundations connect to the unique role of TVIs and the instructional needs of students who are blind or visually impaired.
The session also highlights how evidence-based literacy practices align with Georgia’s K–3 literacy standards and the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC), helping TVIs better support braille literacy, accessible print instruction, and collaboration with general education teachers. This opening session sets the stage for the remaining sessions in the series by establishing a shared understanding of literacy development and the important role TVIs play in supporting strong reading outcomes for their students.
