Description:
Science of Reading Literacy Series for TVIs: Session Three- Phonics & Decoding Skills
Science of Reading Literacy Series for TVIs
A Comprehensive 6-Part Professional Development Framework – Aligned to Georgia K-3 Literacy Standards & Expanded Core Curriculum
In this one-hour session, TVIs explore phonics and decoding skills through the lens of the Science of Reading and their application to students who are blind or visually impaired. Participants build an understanding of how students connect letters and braille symbols to sounds, recognize common spelling patterns, and use these skills to accurately decode unfamiliar words.
The session highlights practical strategies for teaching phonics and decoding in print and braille, with attention to the unique instructional needs of students with visual impairments. Following a “learn it, see it, use it” approach, participants practice applying these strategies to lesson planning and their caseloads and leave with ready-to-use tools for immediate implementation.
